As we head into the summer months, many employees will be planning and taking annual leave. However, did you know that approximately 35% of UK employees do not take their full annual leave entitlement (according to a 2024 BreatheHR report)?

In the UK, most workers are entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid annual leave each year (known as statutory leave entitlement or annual leave).

For those who work 5 days a week this equates to 28 days of paid leave in a year. For part-time workers this will be less, and for workers who work more than 5 days a week, the statutory entitlement is limited to 28 days.

Employees should be encouraged to use their full entitlement. There are many benefits to a well-rested workforce including:

  • Reduced stress levels – taking annual leave supports mental health and wellbeing
  • Increased work life balance
  • Increased performance and creativity
  • Reduced absenteeism

There are a number of ways to help encourage staff to use their annual leave:

  • Managers should lead by example and use their own annual leave entitlement to foster a culture that values rest, wellbeing and work-life balance
  • Ensure your employees are familiar with the annual leave policy and how to request leave
  • Proactively remind employees throughout the year to book and plan their leave. This helps to promote wellbeing, avoid last minute requests and ensures you can plan for adequate cover.
  • Use an HR system such as BreatheHR to book and manage leave requests and entitlement amounts. The system helps both managers and employees track their time off and plan effectively.

Encourage active commuting

Summer is an ideal time promote healthier and greener commuting options, and the Cycle to Work Scheme is a great way to support this.

The Cycle to Work Scheme is a government initiative that allows employees to get a new bike and accessories tax-free, saving up to 47% through salary sacrifice.

The benefits to employers of running a Cycle to Work Scheme include:

  • A happier and healthier workforce which increases productivity
  • Champions environmental sustainability
  • Attracts and retains talent

Mental health support

Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP) are one of the ways in which employers can support the mental health and wellbeing of employees.

EAPs can help employers to provide:

  • Short term counselling
  • Referral services
  • Health and wellbeing programmes

Raising awareness of support and signposting to resources can also help staff. This year the Samaritans Awareness Day takes place on 24th July and aims to remind people they are there to talk to day or night, 24/7.

Highlighting the awareness day as well as other mental health initiatives such as Mental Health Awareness Week can help promote a culture of openness and reduce stigma around mental health.
