The New Year is a great time for employers to focus on workplace wellbeing. With the start of the new year seen as a chance to renew, set meaningful goals and resolutions and approach work and life with new energy, investing in employee wellbeing can help create an environment where employees feel valued, engaged and supported.

Why is workplace wellbeing important?

Figures have shown that poor mental health alone is costing UK businesses more than £45 billion a year, so looking after the wellbeing of your workforce is essential.

Workplace health and wellbeing focuses on ensuring your employees are happy, healthy and engaged with their work. Effective health and wellbeing initiatives can improve productivity, reduce sickness absence and attract and retain talent as well as boosting and maintaining employee morale.

How can you improve workplace wellbeing?

Prioritise mental health

Provide access to mental health resources like counselling or employee assistance programs, which can help employees deal with issues negatively impacting their lives and offer confidential help and support.

Promote work life balance

Offer flexible working options and promote healthy work-life habits. Lead by example.

Promote wellbeing

Promoting wellbeing in the workplace can create positive work environments where employees feel valued, and help prevent stress.

Develop a health and wellbeing strategy

A strategy can help embed workplace wellbeing and encourage optimal physical health and wellbeing.

Provide menopause support

Develop and implement a menopause policy, provide menopause training to managers and help create a supportive and inclusive culture.

Encourage staff to take annual leave

Having a break from work can support mental health and wellbeing. Studies have shown that more than 25% of UK employees don’t use all of their annual leave allowance. Employees who don’t take their full allowance are more likely to suffer with health problems including stress.
